COLUMBIA, SC – Providence Health and Fairfield Memorial Hospital are pleased to announce the school student winners of the annual Rural Health Day Poster Contest. The contest, started by Fairfield Memorial Hospital in 2016 in honor of National Rural Health Day, recognizes the importance of rural health care and the 60+ million Americans who rely on it.
“We want to be sure the children in our community know about options for care,” said Suzie Doscher, CEO of Fairfield Memorial Hospital. “You don’t see rural health depicted in TV shows or in the media, but there are some great resources available. Our young people need to know about these options and the people who provide them.”
This year’s theme was “Heroes of Rural Health,” and all students grades K4 through 12 were invited to submit an entry. Sixteen posters were entered, from which a first place, second place and third place winner were chosen.
This year’s winners are:
- FIRST: Zielaika Curabo, Hank White, Krishi Patel, Kingston Belton, Owen Wilson, Sidney Wilson, Myah McMillan, Kaitlyn, Perry, Promise Belton, Nicole Davis, Qua’Nasia Bryant, 5th grade, Fairfield Magnet School, Ms. Daly’s Class
- SECOND: Marcus Wadlington, 3rd grade, Geiger Elementary, Ms. Roy’s Class
- THIRD: Lakeesha Trapp, 8th grade, Gordon Odyssey Academy, Ms. Gradic’s class
For the winning poster (pictured), each student selected a type health care provider including dentists, optometrists, veterinarians, EMS, nurses and more. Students then researched the specialist they selected to see what types of tools they would use to incorporate into the poster.
“It was heart-warming to see how health care helps the community through the eyes of the students,” said Providence Health-Northeast’s CEO Lindy White. “Poster entries depicted helicopters and stretchers, doctors and nurses, the inner workings of a healthy human body, and even an entry promoting the importance of not smoking.”
Each poster that placed received a gift card for the class from which the poster was submitted, as well as a separate gift card for the team of students who created the poster.
Providence Health was pleased to join Fairfield Memorial Hospital in co-sponsoring this year’s contest as a reflection of their shared commitment to provide care in Fairfield County. Fairfield Memorial Hospital will be closing by the end of the year. Fairfield Memorial Hospital, the community of Fairfield County, and the Providence Health system of Columbia, SC, have been working together to ensure that the community is not without access to emergency services through the construction of a new emergency room facility to be operated by Providence Health. The new facility, located 1.8 miles down the road from the existing Fairfield hospital, will open mid-December 2018. The hospital will remain open until the new ER is open.
