Providence Heart & Vascular Institute was the first facility in the Midlands to provide Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), a treatment for severe symptomatic aortic stenosis patients, giving patients an improved quality of life.

TAVR provides a solution for patients who are not candidates for traditional open chest surgery or who would be considered a high risk surgical patient. The procedure is performed by a catheter type device carrying the prosthetic tissue valve via the femoral artery or by other approaches. The valve is then deployed under fluoroscopy.

“Providence Heart & Vascular Institute has a history of leadership in cardiovascular care in the Midlands,” said Dr. John P. Sutton III, surgeon and clinical lead for the TAVR program (pictured right). “It was important to bring this technology to our patients because it opens up therapy to improve quality of life and even reduces mortality risk for patients we could not previously treat.”

TAVR services can be performed by: Dr. Michael C. Foster, Dr. J. William Phillips, Dr. William Yarbrough, or Dr. John P. Sutton III (seen right).
